Spatial Networking
Theory (2016)

Spatial networks are defined here as social platforms that leverage immersive technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), to allow users to create, share content, and engage in spatial networking activities. This form of digital communication enhances the creative process and enables the sharing of 3D assets, interests, information, and other forms of human expression.

Spatial networking changes the game for digital interactions. It creates immersive spaces that lead to better, more interactive communication, building a stronger community feel. This turns remote interactions into richer experiences that closely resemble face-to-face ones, improving how we connect and collaborate online.

The Four Pillars to
Spatial Networking:

  • Embodiment focuses on the sense of being present in a virtual space. It encompasses the development of a virtual identity, allowing individuals to represent themselves in unique, meaningful ways.

This pillar is fundamental in creating a sense of personal presence and authenticity in the virtual realm, enhancing the connection between the virtual and the physical self.

  • Common Reality in Spatial Networking involves the 'together mode', which is essential for creating a multiplayer, shared experience.

This pillar emphasizes the importance of a unified virtual environment where participants can interact in a common space. It's about ensuring that everyone is part of the same digital world, fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness, crucial for effective virtual collaboration and community building.

  • Engagement is about active user participation and the utilization of real-time communications. This pillar includes the use of body language and other non-verbal cues in virtual spaces.

It’s about making interactions as natural and intuitive as possible, mirroring real-world communication dynamics. Engagement in Spatial Networking ensures that interactions are not just visual and auditory, but also convey the subtleties of human expression.

  • Impact revolves around experiential play, interactive elements, and sensory exploration. It’s about providing hands-on contributions and engaging activities that resonate on a deeper level with users.

This pillar focuses on creating experiences that are not only immersive but also meaningful, leaving a lasting impression and fostering a deeper level of understanding and connection.
